Sam Kerr, a standout for Chelsea, is the first woman to appear on Electronic Arts’ global Fifa game cover.

  • Fifa 23’s global cover will feature Kylian Mbappé of Paris St. Germain and Kerr.
  • One of the most popular video game series in the world, the Fifa series has made billions of dollars in sales.

When the nearly three-decade-old Fifa brand debuts “Fifa 23” this year, Australian striker Sam Kerr will be the first female player to appear on the global cover of the computer game, according to a Monday announcement from the game’s creator, Electronic Arts.

Kerr, a player for Women’s Super League champions Chelsea, will be included with Kylian Mbappe, a forward for Paris St. Germain and France’s World Cup winner, who has graced the cover of the last two publications.

With 20 goals in as many games, Kerr, 28, led the WSL in scoring last season. In 108 games for Australia since her debut in 2009 at the age of 15, she has also scored 56 goals.

“Up front are two extraordinary powers. One ultimate strike alliance,” said a tweet from EA Sports Fifa that unveiled the cover.

In previous years, women have solely appeared on regional covers. On the cover of the North American version of Fifa 16, which was the first to feature women’s teams, Lionel Messi was joined by Americans Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair from Canada.

The Fifa series is one of the most popular video game franchises in the world and has made billions of dollars in sales, but this year’s title is the last one produced by EA after they split with the world soccer governing organisation Fifa.

Fifa rejected EA’s substantial offer for an eight-year period of exclusivity over all of its gaming and esports rights because the soccer organisation did not want to tie up all of its gaming and e-football rights with a single publisher.
